“When I was living in California, one of my friends said, ‘Here’s a trick to play on your friends. Just be the most enthusiastic person in every single interaction. Be like, “Hey, how are you doing?” to every single person. Even if you don’t even know them, just do that and see what happens.”
For me, I was very frightened to do that. Because for one, I don’t like to speak to strangers. I’ve worked my way to getting better at that. That’s part of becoming Kū; you’ve gotta attack those weaknesses, the things that you are afraid of, in order to get where you need to be.
Back to the story… I started to do that when I was walking around the school that I was working at. I went up to the students, and said, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ I wasn’t being Mr. Enthusiasm, like a cheerleader or something, but the interesting thing was that everybody started to feel a little more bubbly as well. (They call it the mirror neurons, right?)
It was at that point I realized that how you approach people could make a difference in a person’s day. That just kind of clicked in my head. I thought, ‘If I could instill strength into somebody, to feel stronger every day, then I think that my day is a success. I’m living a life full of meaning and value.’
That’s what wakes me up, is that I have the opportunity to make people feel stronger.”
